CHAPTER VI.

An Account of the different Explosions fromJune l TQ4 to October 1813, containing thosethat have happened at Harr at on, Washing-ton , Lumley, Hepburn, Oxclose , Felling,Harrington , Collingwood Main , and Fat-field.

In the year 1812 society were presented withthat excellent medium of philosophic intelli-gence, Dr. Thomsons Annals of Philosophy,from the pages of which, and the aid of con-siderable local information, the present state-ments are enabled to assume a character ofauthenticity and descriptive fact, which aloneentitles them to public consideration.

The explosion at Felling, in 1812, appears tohave been the first introduced into any generalpublications, but antecedent to that period along train of misery is furnished from 1704.

As no detailed account can be obtained, itwill suffice to state that, on June 11 ,1794, anexplosion took place at Harraton, situate onthe banks of the Wear, opposite LambtonPark, the seat of J. Lambton, Esq. whichkilled twenty-eight people.
