The quick repetitions of the latter accidents,and the sensation produced throughout thekingdom by their publication in the news-papers, gave rise to the following correspon-dence ; and every heart must concur with mein paying a tribute of public respect to thephilanthropic exertions of Dr, Clanny. Hehad witnessed the effect of these accidents; hehad professionally attended to the sufferers;and, without any other motive than humanityin behalf of the miners, he exerted himselfmore than six years back to prevent explosionsfrom fire-damp, and has ever since paid themost zealous and friendly attention to theircause; and though the result has not beenwhat might have been expected, still his claimcontinues not only undiminished but increased.The subsequent inventions have arisen from hisexertions in keeping the subject alive; and4
