“ Sir,
u I was honoured by your letter under thedate of the Sth of August, for which I beg toreturn you my most sincere thanks. I shouldhave replied sooner had not a pressure of pro-fessional engagements prevented me.
“ I rejoice to find that my conduct has metyour approbation, and that so young a persondedicates his hours to the relief of sufferinghumanity. Before I took the subject of ex-plosion into consideration, the very editors ofprovincial newspapers were afraid of publish-ing those accidents lest interested personsmight be offended.
“ I fell upon a direct method of making theseexplosions public by procuring their insertionin the Annals of Philosophy, edited by Dr.Thomson; and from this scientific journal theywere copied into other journals ; and thus ori-ginated the establishment of a society for theprevention of those accidents in this town.
