Dr. Clanny’s New Lamp, with curious Ac-count of Experiments with his OriginalApparatus.
The security of Dr. Clanny’s original lampwas testified beyond ail doubt, by the expe-riments which were made by him and myself atand in the Harrington Mill Pit: and such wasthe force of conviction which this trial carried,that some neighbouring viewers began to feelan anxiety for its application. Dr. Clannyhaving given one of his lamps to Mr. Patter-son, the engineer who accompanied us in themine, with an appropriate inscription, seve-ral subsequent and most satisfactory trialswere made, some of them in situations whereit was thought totally impossible for any lightto be introduced : one of these I shall mention.The machinery of the downcast shaft to amine adjoining the Harrington Mill Pit beingunder repair, the miners were obliged to re-main on the surface away from their work,until the repairs were completed. It was ne-cessary however that the horse-keeper should attimes be sent down in order to feed the horses,
