The quantity of coals sworn to before thecommissioners at Sunderland as consumed inpotteries, lime-kilns, &c. is about 10,000 chal-drons annually.

An estimate of the number of persons re-ceiving employment from this trade was madein 1792, by Dr. Macnab, who calculated that64,724 persons were employed by the col-lieries of the Tyne and Wear, of whom 26,250belonged to the Wear, and 6,704 were pitmenand boys belonging to the works on the Tyne 5and the remainder on the Tyne as follows :
