directly upon it, and make it thus into astrong Lie, smelt pure Silver, that has notany Gold in it, and throw it into the Lieas soon as it fluxes; having repeated thisfour or five Times, the Silver will, uponTrial, be found to contain some Gold init, which by this Means is really consti-tuted ; such therefore as will deny theabove-mentioned Maturation of Metals,let them try this Experiment, and assignthe Reasons how this Gold came into theSilver ; to me, it is more convincing, thanall their seeming Force of Argument, andBeauty of Language; Perhaps it may besaid, that the Gold was occasioned byoften smelting the Silver in the Fire; butthis cannot, by found Reason or Expe-rience, be any-ways proved ; for, I doaffirm, that Silver never receives or obtainsany Gold by smelting, let it be ever so oftenrepeated ; notwithstanding what has beenasserted by Homberg , Menkel , and otherWriters, to the contrary : And such asimagine them to be in the right, I mustalso refer to try the Experiment; whichwill evidently convince them, that no Goldcan be obtained from pure Silver by often-times smelting.
