son’s several iron propeller boats may be seen every day on the De-laware, carryıng the rich mineral products of Pennsylvania to theeast.

“ But not only did Captain Stockton order, on his own account,the two iron boats to which I have referred; he at once brought thesubject before the Government of the United States, and causednumerous plans and models to be made at his own expense, explain-ing the peculiar fitness of the new invention for ships of war. Socompletely persuaded was he of its great importance in this aspect,and so determined that his views should be carried out, that heboldly assured the inventor that the Government of the United Stateswould test the propeller on a large scale; and so confident wasEricsson that the perseverance and energy of Captain Stocktonwould sooner or later accomplish what he promised, that he at onceabandoned his professional engagements in England, and set out forthe United States,

«“ Circumstances delayed, for some two years, the execution of theirplan. With the change of the federal administration, Captain Stock-ton was first able to obtain a favourable hearing; and under theauspices of the present administration, the experiment of the Prince-ton has been made, and has been successful.

“It is due to the inventor to mention that the propeller, as success-fully applied in the Princeton, ıs the same precisely in constructionwith that of the Francis B. Ogden; not merely in theory, but in itsminute practical details.

“ There is now a propeller in the Pheenix Foundry, in New York,brought over by Captain Ericsson, in the British Queen, im 1839,which, in all its essential parts, is a fac-simile of that in the FrancisB. Ogden, and of that in the Princeton.”
