The iron crowbars are likewise of two kinds, and each kind is pointed atone end. One is rounded, and with this they pierce to a shaft full of waterwhen a tunnel reaches to it; the other is flat, and with this they knock outof the stopes on to the floor, the rocks which have been softened by the fire,and which cannot be dislodged by the pike. A miner’s pike, like a sailor’s,is a long rod having an iron head.
