one and a half palms thick. There are mortised into this longitudinal beamthe lower ends of upper posts three palms wide and two thick, which are sixfeet two palms high, exclusive of their tenons. The upper ends of theseposts are mortised into an upper longitudinal beam, which lies close underthe rafters of the building ; this upper longitudinal beam is two palmswide and one thick. The upper posts have a slot cut out upward from apoint two feet from the bottom, and the slot is two feet high and six digitswide. Through these upper posts a round hole is bored from one side tothe other at a point three feet one palm from the bottom, and a small iron axlepenetrates through the hole and is fastened there. Around this small ironaxle turns the second lever when it is depressed and raised. This lever iseight feet long, and its other end is three digits wider than the rest of thelever ; at this widest point is a hole two digits wide and three high, in whichis fixed an iron ring, to which is tied the rope I have mentioned; it is fivepalms long, its upper loop is two palms and as many digits wide, and the
