PJREEACE.

Hüll in 1876, and the promotion of similar undertakings inother towns will afforcl an increased field for utilising hydraulicpower.

Whilst describing the most interesting types of HydraulicMaehinery, I have abstained alike from criticisms on the detailsof construction, and from any attempts to lay down fixed rulesfor the employinent of any particular appliance. The conditionswhich render one form of appliance more suitable than anothervary in almost every case, so that each requires to be dealt withaccording to the practical circumstances which govern it.

As my earliest experiences in this branch of my practicewere gained nearly thirty years ago, when with Sir William Armstrong , I have dedicated this book to him ; and his friendlyacceptance of this dedication has enabled me, in these laterdays, to refer to an association which I look hack upon withpleasure and pride.
