supplies both: the next best is argillaceous mart;and next to these, clay, mixed with lime, orcalcareous, or clayey loams. In Norfolk , theyseem to value clay more than marl, probablybecause their sandy soils already contain cal-careous parts; possibly, also, they misnamemarl, i calling mere chalk by that name. Limeor; chalk are less proper, as they do not givesufficient coherence to the soil; however, whenmixed with earth or dung, they answer wellbecause they form a sort of marl or compound,comprehending the defective ingredients.

SANDY LOAMS.

These are defective chiefly in the calcareousingredient, and, in some degree, also in theargillaceous; their texture too is imperfect, asthey abound both in tine and coarse sand; chalkor lime would supply the first defect, but wouldleave the texture unamended.
