the nature of their soil should be explored byanalysis, and an appropriate manure applied. In general, they should first be burned, if ca-pable of that operation, then gravelled. Iftheir upper parts contain a sufficiency of thecarbonaceous principle, as often happens, theyneed not be burned. Limestone-gravel willanswer best, or lime mixed with coarse sand orgravel, because in general they are of a clayeynature; if more sandy, lime may answer well,or calcareous marl. The preference in thesecases must be decided by analysis *.
HEATHY SOILS.
These should first be burned, to destroy theheath and increase the carbonaceous principle:they should then be analysed, and the defec-tive principles supplied. Lime is said to de-stroy heath, and so is limestone-gravel f: thisis fittest when the soil is clayey; lime when itis gravelly Gypsum also answers remarka-bly well when the soils are dry.
