firmed by the account of the entry of Louis XII. into Pavia, in 1499, given by Fran-cefco Muralto, juris confulto of Como, who fays,—“ Malta fuereper Papienfes donoregiiradita et inter catenaforma centum cafei Placentina civitatis.” It is alfo worth obferving, that though they did not make good cheefcrat this period, (as we may-fudge, from theirbuying it elfewhere,) yet fome cheefe was made at Tecchione, a farm belonging tothem, of the weight of fourteen pounds per cheefe, as it appears by their ledgers ior theyear 1494. *

Venice. —This city is fupplied with beef from Bofnia, Carinthia., Styria, and Hungary :at prefent the export from thofe countries is prohibited, on account of fupplying theEmperor’s armies in Hungary. Mutton from Dalmatia , and Bofnia.

Ecclesiastical State. — Bologna. —In their cow-houfes they have the fame ftepat the heels of the beafts as I have in my own, and which I copied from Mr. Bakevvell•many years ago ; but they have applied it to their horle-ftables alfo, which I never metwith before ; yet it is an obvious improvement, which well deferves imitation. Thefloors of their flails are level.

Tuscany . —Though the quantity of cattle of every kind in this country is much in-ferior to what it ought to be, yet is the art of fattening an ox well underflood. In fum-mer they feed on mown clover and faggina (the great millet, bolcus forguni) ; alfo onmaiz, and a mixture of all forts of corn and pulfe, called farrana. Price of an ox, 45fcudi (at 5s. 8d.) j a cow, 30 ; a flieep, 1 ; a horfe, 20 ; a hog, 7.
