\OUNG’s TRAVELS IN FRANCE .

Venetian State. — Vaprio to Bergamo . —There are many mulberries, mixed withthe cultivation of corn and vines, in this traQ: of country.

Bergamo . —Four ounces of feed are here given to each poor family, which yield fourpeft of cocoons.

Brcfcia. —One hundred pefi of leaves are neceflary to one ounce of feed ; and fourpefi of hozzoli, or cocoons, are the produce of one ounce ; and the pcfo of cocoons gives-twenty-eight to thirty ounces of filk. Cocoons fell at 45 livres per pefo. Leaves at1 livre ; and filk at 22 livres to 24 livres per pound. The trees are lopped every threeyears ; yet fome are known that give twenty pefi of leaves. Small ones half a pefo andone pejo.

Verona. —One ounce of feed demands feventeen or eighteen facchi of leaves, each onehundred Veronefe pounds (or feventy-four pounds Engliflih Twelve ounces of feedare given to each family ; and each ounce returns fmy pounds of cocoons, at twelveounces the pound ; the price 2\f. the pound. To each ounce of feed lixteen to eigh-teen facchi of leaves, each one hundred pounds of twelve ounces are neceflary. Thefixty pounds cocoons, at 24 f. are 72 livres, or 36s.; which is the produce of eight trees, or4s. fd. a tree, the half of which is 2s. 3d. It mull howeverbe remarked, that thefe pricesofcocoons vary fo much, that no rule can be drawn from them : this price of 24 f. thepound is very low, and rnurt; arife from fome local circumllance. One ounce of filk toone pound of cocoons. They are here, as in the preceding didrifls, in the cultom offinding the trees and half the feed, and the peafanrs the red ; and they divide the co-coons. A tree of forty years old will give four facchi ; and if a plantation corifid of ,

one thoufand trees, they will, one with another, give two facchi. They make filk inthe Veronefe to the amount of a million of pounds of twelve ounces. There are, nearthe city, fome trees in a rich arable field feventy years old, that yield from four to fixfacks of leaves each ; this is about ics. a tree at the lowed price of cocoons.

To Vicenza . —There are many rows of mulberries in the meadows, that are never dugaround, and yet quite healthy, which proves that they might be fcattered fuccefsfullyabout grafs lands, if any proof were wanting of fo undoubted a'fadl. In the arable lands, the foil all gravel, they are planted twelve ridges apart. Some of the trees are old, that fpread feven or eight yards acrofs.

Vicenza . —The produce of filk amounts here to about 6 livres the campo, over a wholefarm ; this is about 3s. an acre. The facco of leaves weighs feventy-five pounds, andforty facchi are neceflary for one ounce of feed ; which gives one hundred pounds ofcocoons, and ten pounds of filk. One hundred trees, of twenty years old, yieldforty facchi; price 3 livres to 1 x livres; commonly 3 livres. Price of cocoons $of. to50 f the pound.

I was glad here to meet with fome intelligence concerning the new filk worm, faid tohave come from Perfia, which they have had here eight years, but is in the hands of fofew perfons, that I could get none of the feed; and I fufpe£t that it is lofi, for, on re-peated inquiries, I was referred to other parts of Italy . While they had this worm, theyhad four crops of cocoons a year: — 1. In the beginning of June. 2. The end of thefame month. 3. The middle of Auguft. 4. In O&ober. This worm is eflentially dif-ferent from the common ones in the circumllance of hatching : no art will hatch theeggs of the common fort the firlt year, that is the year of the flies dropping them ; theycan be hatched the year following only; but of this new fort, the eggs will hatch in fifteendays the fame year, if they be in the proper heat. But it is to be observed, that theyufe this fort of worm not really to command feveral crops in the fame year, for mulberry.trees will not bear it without deftru&ion, but merely as a fuccedaneum to the common

fort
