FORTIa’s TRAVELS IN SWEDEN.

digern Buchern , of S. J. Baumgarten, book ii. p. 318, and following pages, is found afufficiently ample and impartial extradt of thefe three volumes.
The fourth volume of the work of Rudbeck has no diftinguifhing title : it was fet toprefs in the author’s own printing-houfe, but fcarcely was the third Iheet of the fecondalphabet completed, before the printing office and all its contents were confumed, ow-ing to a fire,, which deftroyed a confiderable part of the city of Upfal, in the month ofMay, 1702. Not only were all the remaining copies of the third volume (of which butvery few had been delivered) burnt in this conflagration, but alfo the different fteetsalready ftruck off of the fourth volume, together with the manufcript of the author. Ofthe {beets printed, three or four copies were faved according to fome, according toothers, five. V. Hamb. Beytraege , 1741. p. 458. One is preferved in the King’s li-brary, another in that of Count Ehrenpreus , and this copy, which I frequently had oppor-tunities of feeing, was fold in 17 61 5 at an exorbitant price, to Mr. Rofenadler , Counfel-lor of the Chancery.
The curious, in order to render this work as complete as poffible, caufe it to be co-pied in manufcript. Mr. John Thierri de Schoenberg, a Saxon gentleman, poffeffed amanufcript copy of this work ; in the Biblioth. Seledtiffima, Amft. 1743, in 8vo. book ii,p. 584, this part of the Atlantica is improperly ftated to be inedita et preco-parata. Ano-ther manufcript copy of the fame fourth book is quoted in the Catalog, biblioth. Woogiana,p. 597. Mr. Boze moreover fliortly before his death had farther a copy fent him fromStockholm , to my knowledge.
Rudbeck in the two firft chapters of this fourth volume, treats de confenfu facri codiciret Scriptorum profanorum in rebus ultima antiquitath ; in the third chapter he treats ofmatters relative to the 1800th year of the world ; and in the fourth, which however isnot complete, de Us qua Nachori Tarachi atque Manni et qua proximo, fequebatur atatead A. M. 1900, illujlriora habeniur. He has added to this a chronological and geo-graphical illuftration of the fyftem he endeavours to eftablifli.
As the Atlantica of Rudbeck was difficult to be met with, and very expenfive, abookfeller of Rotterdam , named Hof bout, conceived the defign of publifhing a new edi-tion of the Latin alone, fo reducing to two volumes, the three of which he had anyknowledge, being utterly a ftranger to the fourth. The profpedtus he publifhed for theannunciation of his intention', was as follows : “ Sciagraphia Atlantica five ManheimiiOlavi Rudbeckii—Duo volumina, in folio, cum tabulis varii generis, et figuris innumeris anti-quitatem turn Suevicam turn Gothicam peRantibus. Ut et conditiones qua elegantioris huma-nitatis cultoribusproponantur et ad quas de novo in publicum prodibit — Rotterdam , &c. 1726,in 4to. pp. 12. In the France literaire of the Berlin edition, 1757, in 8vo. p. 131,this prolpedtus is attributed to M. Cartier de St. Philip, who probably had engaged to fu-pcrintend the edition, and corredt the proofs. This project was not carried into ex-ecution.
Of the fourth volume it has feveral times been in contemplation to give a new edition. The firft perfon who projedted this was the author’s own fon, as maybe feen'in theA&a liter. Suecise 1*20, p. 57, and by a letter of the celebrated Wolfius, of Hamburg,Written the 14th Odiober 1722, and inferted in the Thefaurus epiftolicus Lacrozianus,b. ii. 18 1, and following pages. It appears that Doctor Heubel, of Kiel, had the fameintention. Neither the one nor the other fucceeded any more than the printer Salvius,at Stockholm , who attempted the fame a-frefli in 1743* Some years afterwards Mr.de Weftphalen, Chancellor of the court of Holftein, Gotterp, determined on re-printingthefe Iheets, for the purpofe of enriching one of the volumes of his grand colledtion, en- -
