furnifhed. Two vafes of porcelain four feet high. Among other things, two paint-ings by Ehrenftrabe, regarded as a Swedilh painter, although he was not born in Swe-den. He lived in the time of Charles XI. and was ennobled by the name of Klcecher. An apartment containing divers pidures, lerves as a palfage to the library. The fuc-ceeding room communicates diredly with the library ; in it are two fine antique bulls, and fome elegant modern pieces. CEdipus by Gagnerot. Ariadne by Vertinuller, anddifferent paintings by Watteau and Chardin . The library is a very handfome room,.ornamented with great tafte : independant of the choice books it contains, there are in■it a pretty numerous colle&ion of Errufcan vafes, fome of which are valuable. A lin-gular vale four feet high, found in the country. Guftavus Vafa in wax, under glafs, very fmall and exquifitely well executed; and two final 1 antique Ilatues in a kneelingpolture, in marble. Manufcripts are feen in abundance, many of which inefiimable :the librarian, Mr. Leopold , not having thought proper to take the trouble of bufferingus to examine them minutely *, we fhall only cite thirty-fix volumes on the Swedifh hif-tory, beginning with Guftavus Vafa: Divers reflections, a manufeript by Queen Chriftina:a manufeript of Charles XII . when a boy ; in one part of which vincere aut mqri. Thelibrary is ornamented with analogous inferiptions: over the door by which you enter,Artibus peel or a mollcfcunt, afperitafque fugit (the temper of man is foftened by the arts,•and all its ruggednefs difmiifed). Over the fham doors on the fide : Nequeft chart#Jileant quod benefeceris, mereedem tuleris.
Nor do you gain your due renown,
1 Unlefs your worthy deeds in hiftory be fliewn.
Carmina fit vivax virtus, experfque fepulchri ,
Immortal virtue lives in lading fong,
And mocks the tomb.
Over the door at the end: Cordis et oris optima ejl harmonia , belt is the harmony ofheart and tongue. On the fides oppofite to each other, Vincit ingenium probitas(honelty is above genius). Studio minuente labores (fiackening your fludy you en-creafe your toil). Moniti meliora fequamur (follow better counfel). Vita et pedorepuro (with life unfullied and a confidence clear). The next apartment is a cabinet ofbooks; it contains a model in relievo of the temple of Ifis at Pompeia. A Hove with twocolumns of green antique marble. Two large vafes on candelabras after the antique, eight feet high, with white mafks on the vafes. An antique llatue of a woman repre-fenting fculpture, and fome other matters of but flight importance. The Cabinet ofMedals comprifes a very fine colledion of Greek, Roman, and ancient of all nations,in eight cafes, which contain more than twelve thoufand drawers: among the Swedilh, are a fmall medal taken to be of King Bitzurn, but this is doubtful; another thought tobe of Olaus ; a Stros Konung, very rare, ftruck from all appearance in England ; a veryrare medal, the fize of a half dollar piece, of Guftavus I. ftruck at Upfal. We werenot able to go over this colle&ion minutely, as it was undergoing an arrangement; theperfon employed for the purpofe having underhandedly difpofed of Teveral pieces, hadbeen difmiifed, fince when, His Majefty keeps the key of it himfelf. This will be theproper place to introduce an account of Swedilh medals.
* As a matter of comfort on this fcore, His Majefty told 11s that he himfelf could not have the attend-ance of his librarian at all times he wilhed. Neverihelefs we felt ourfelves much hurt at fuch a procedure, happening in a country where we had met fo few examples of difeourtefy.
