FORTIa’s TRAVELS IN SWEDEN.

475

the Archbifhop, (Mr. Troil, a well informed man, formerly Bilhop ofLinkoeuping, andauthor, among other things, of Letters on Iceland , a work much efteemed, and which hasbeen tranflated into French, ) a number of Swedifh noblemen have taken up their abodehere, fome to be nearer to their eftates, and fome to avoid the expence and tumult of thecapital. Among thefe we have to notice in particular the Senator, Baron Geer, formerlySecretary of State for foreign affairs: we have to thank him for the obliging mannerin which he received us, foreigners entirely unknown to him, but hill more for the ac-quaintance of a well informed, affable, polite man, in vvhofe fociety the curious travel-ler could but acquire great advantage. Upfal on many accounts is deferving of beingieen ; in order to notice all, a flay, of at lead three days will be requifue : this city isinterefting were it only for its giving birth to Linnaeus and Bergmann. A houfe isbuilding in memory of Linnaeus at the royal gardens, which ferve for a public pro-menade.

The cathedral is the larged and handfomed church in Sweden ; of it this aflertionmight make a perfon who had not feen the others form rather a high, opinion ; buthaving viewed them it will be readily conjeftured that better might be ere6ted, whichvet fhould be far from perfect. This church is however truly remarkable on accountof the tombs it contains, which, although no mader pieces, are interefiing, as they re-gard the hidory of the country. The church- is two hundred and thirty feet long fromthe extremity to the altar; beyond which is a chapel of fome depth: its width is onehundred and eight feet; it has three naves, and chapels all round it : in that behindthe great altar is the tomb of Gudavus Vafa and his wives ; his children and grand-children are interred in the one adjoining. In this John III . was buried. The monumentover his tomb, erected by Sigifmund, was made in Italy ; but the veflels carrying it toSweden being fhipwrecked on the coad of Dantzick it was tranfported thither, where itremained near two hundred years; it has been brought hither only within thefe fewyears: it is no honour to the arts, and was in a bad date. In another chapel are thelepulchres of the families of Oxenjiiern and Stenbock. In another two beautiful Sarco-phagi in marble to the memory of Charles de Geer , Marlhal of the court, and his lady ;his bud alfo in white marble, on the fragment of an antique fluted column, erected byhis wife. The tomb of Sture and his two fons, killed by order of Eric XIV. The fe-pulchre of the fir A wife of Sigifmund. On the right of the great altar are the relics ofSt. Eric, and nothing elfe remarkable. Linnaeus is inhumed beneath a done near thedoor without any infeription or even his name (whatever the Dutch traveller may ad-vance to the contrary). In a fort of cave adjoining the church is a wooden idol of theGod Thor, which does not appear fo ancient as faid to be, with the chalice, crofier, &c.prefented by Pope Alix III. to the fird bilhop of Upfal.

The univerfity of this city was founded by Sten Sture the elder, in 1476, who ob-tained permifiion for the purpofe from Sixtus IV. , and took the inditution at Bologna forhis model. The adminidrators and fenators confirmed the bull of Sixtus IV. (of the28th of February 1476,) on the 20th July 1477, an ^ granted to this academy all theprivileges enjoyed by the univerfity of Paris . In 1624 Gudavus Adolphus affignedthem edates under the direction of the confidory of profefiors. The revenue was then25,000 crowns, of 3 dollars j but this fum is now nearly tripled: it is however depend-ant on the feafons. The univerfity appoints two profefTors, called JErarii, to manageits property, who retain their places for two years, when one of them goes out. Thereare four faculties, viz four profelfors of theology, (there were five,) who at the fametime compofe the ecclefiaftical confidory, two of jurifprudence, thirteen of philofophy, and four of medicine. T he new profeffors are: one of theology, one of private oeco-
