A PARK GATE LODGE in the GRECIAN STYLE.

DESIGN No. 2.

PERSPECTIVE VIEW, ELEVATION, PLAN,PLATE II.

The observations made upon the preceding design, as to erecting asingle Lodge to an entrance, instead of twoor rather dividing thedwelling into two separate partswill apply to this, and also the followingones. If the mansion be jn the Grecian or modern style, so also oughtthe entrance Lodge. Exceptions, undoubtedly, there may be, arisingfrom particular circumstances, or peculiarity of site and scenery, but theabove may be safely taken as a general rule. Consequently the Lodgehere shown, is intended to be attached to a residence of similar architec-tural character. The expression aimed at, is that of the least pretendingform of the Greek or columnar style, in order to obtain which, squarepillars have been preferred to round ones, both as being less expensivein execution, and as conveying the idea of greater strength, than columnsof the same diameter would do. It is absurd to argue that squarecolumns are less beautiful than round ones, for granting such in theabstract to be the case, it is for that very reason, that they recommendthemselves, where the intent is obviously to keep down features thatwould otherwise make the rest appear too homely, or require greaterfinish to be bestowed throughout.

This design differs from the first one, in having only a ground floor, for buildings of which description, Grecian architecture is better suitedthan for any other. The chimneys are omitted in the Plate, as theywould hardly be apparent in the building, certainly not so as to interferewith the elevations. The blank windows on the returns of the portico, and those on each side of it, might be omitted, and the design be evenimproved by such alteration.

This Lodge might be executed in brick, with stone dressings, for £420 : 0 : 0. In brickand stucco, for £ 380 : 0 : 0. Or in stone, for £ 500 : 0 : 0.
