DuR IN G the preparations for the second invasion of North Caro- Chap. iv:.hna, emissaries had been dispatched into that province, to obtain intel-ligence of the force and designs of the Americans. Near the end ofDecember information was received, that General Greene (D.) hadt^ade a division of his troops, who did not exceed one thousand fourhundred men, exclusive of the militia and, that he had committedthe light infantry and Colonel Washington’s cavalry to General Mor-gan, with directions to pass the Catawba and Broad rivers, in order to Movementsc °Hect the militia in the districts through which he marched, andricans.
