** arofe up a new king 'over Egypt, which knew not Jofeph,”iiGYPr.Exod. i. 8. But this king of Egypt was not one of the lhep-herds ; for he is called Pharaoh, Exod. i. n, 22. And Mofestold his fuccefior, that if the people of Ifrael fhould facrifice inthe land of Egypt, " they fhould facrifice the abomination ofthe Egyptians before their eyes, and the Egyptians would ftone44 them,” Exod. viii. 26 : that is, they fhould facrifice fheep oroxen, contrary to the religion of Egypt. The fhepherds there-fore did not reign over Egypt, while Ilfael was there ; but eitherwere driven outof Egypt, before Ifrael went down thither; or didnot enter into Egypt, till after Mofes had brought Ifrael fromthe n ce : and the latter muit be true, if they were driven out ofEgypt a little before the buildingof the Temple of Solomon, asManetho affirms.

IX. Diodorus 3 faith in his 4oth book, " that in Egypt there» Diodor.

" were formerly multitudes of ftrangers of feveral nations, who ^^b-" ufied foreign rites and ceremonies in worfhipping the Gods, for 11011 ’’

44 which they were expelled Egypt; and under Danaus, Cadmus,

44 andother fkilful commanders, after great hardfhips, came in-44 to Greece, and other places ; but the greatefi part of them44 came into Judaea, not far from Egypt, a country then uninha-44 bited and defert, being conducted thither by one Mofes, a44 wile and valiant man, who, after he had poffeft himfelf of44 the country, among other things built Jerufalem, and the44 Temple.” Diodorus here miftakes the original of the Ifraelites,as Manetho had done before; confounding their fliglit into thewildernefs under the condudl of Mofes, with the flight of thefhepherds from Mifphragmuthofis, and his fon Amofis, into Phce-

given to Abraham, that in him Ihould ali the families of the earth be blefled. Which wav ofreckoning forne think juflilied by St. Paul, Gal. iii. 8 and 17. Abraham was 7; years old wh:nhe received this promife, and fettled in Canaan in confequence of it, Gen. xii. 4. Therefore ..from the promife to the birth of Ifaac, when Abraham was 100 ycarsot age, the interval.

was - 24 years.

From the birth of Ifaac to the birth of Jacob, Gen. xx. 26. 60

From the birth of jacob to his fettiement in Egypt, Gen. xlvii. g. 130

From that time to Jofeph’s death, 70Whole interval from the promife to Jofeph’s death, 284

There remains, of the 430 years of fojournment, 146, for the whole interval between J .feph’adeath and the Exodus. Eighty of thele 146 intervened between the birth of Moles and the Exo-dus : for Mofes died at the age of 120, Deut. xxxiv. 7 : and the 11 caelites had wandered inthe wildernefs 40 years before his death. Therefore there will remain 66 years for the intervalbetween the death of Jofeph and the birth of Mofes.
