M O N G the innumerable Evils, of which the diabolical Rage for Waris productive, it is perhaps none of the least, that the Attention of theHistorian is so engrossed by the Battles and Exploits of Heroes, that thoseBenefactors to Mankind, who have figured in Arts or Sciences, andemployed all their Time and their Talents in civilizing the World, areeither entirely forgot, or considered only as acting an under Part on thegreat Stage of Life. Whoever considers the noble Remains of Art, exhibited in the followingSheets, must conclude, that the City, which contained them, did once make a very considerableFigure; and argue by analogy, that the fame Taste and Skill, which were exerted in raisingthese Buildings, were not confined to Architecture only, but produced a similar Excellencein the whole Circle of Arts and Sciences: So that Pojidonia , in these Particulars, might onceperhaps have been not much inferior to Athens itself: And yet so it is, that very scantyMaterials for its History are to be found in the ancient Writers, by whom, when we have
