These 7 rounds were fired down the river from the sameplace as before; the elevation of the gun being 15 degreesand all other circumstances the same as before. Thegun was pointed nearly to the middle of the river ; yet theballs fell mostly wide of the direction, and that both wayssome falling near one side of the river, and some near theother, though there was not the least wind. The times offlight were taken with a stop watch, at the lower station ofobservers at e, by noting the time between seeing the flashof the gun and the plunge of the ball in the water. Theyrun from 14 to 15 '- seconds, and accord very well with theranges, the larger to the larger: the medium is 14-7 se-conds; and the medium range 6216 feet, or 2072 yards.N* 3 was not seen. The mean length of charge 4-8 inchesThe same parties of young gentlemen kept their stationvery gallantly, and made no hesitation in offering to attendand observe there tor the remainder of the experimentsthough some of the balls this day again fell near them, andone indeed within 40 yards of them.
