In no class are renewedembryological investigations, extending over a variety offamilies, so much needed, as in that of Birds, if we desireto derive any assistance in their natural classificationfrom the peculiarities of their development; and yet thegeneral development of these animals is perhaps betterknown than that of any other type . 1 The class of Mam-malia 2 has found in Bischolf a most successful andthorough investigator . 3
