Introduction.

It is with, especial pride we present this illustrated catalogue to the usersand those interested in the progress and improvements made hy us in wood-working machinery since our 1885 edition, for the rapid and economic con-version of wood into the many diversified uses, purposes, and shapes demandedhy the present necessities, new methods and systems of planing mills, sash,door and blind, furniture, wheel, carriage, plow and agricultural implementshops, railway and car works, arsenals and navy yards, etc., etc., for the savingof labor, for increasing the quantity of work (in some cases to more than fiftyper cent.), while the quality produced is of the very highest standard of ex-cellence and perfection.

A brief examination of this catalogue will disclose that J. A. Fay & Co.manufacture the largest and most extensive list of wood-working machinery ofany similar establishment in the world.

Every tool has been designed and adapted with special reference to theneeds and wants of its particular class of trade, especially as to strength, speed,durability, and convenience of operation. Persons desiring machinery for anybranch of wood conversion can from this book intelligently select suitablemachines for the completion of any particular work desired. The variety ofmachines has been increased until they now reach nearly four hundred, andthe wants of every class of manufacturehave been anticipated.

To keep pace with the enormous growth of business and meet the increaseddemand for our tools both at home and abroad we have been compelled to makeextensive additions to our hitherto enormous plant, which has been equippedwith the most modern and approved metal-working tools money could procure,These, together with the improved facilities for handling (viz., traveling cranesand special tools and appliances), has greatly increased our capacity of produc-tion, enabling us to fill orders with the utmost dispatch.

Great attention is paid to designs, which are carefully studied, and the verybest methods of construction adopted to secure uniformity in sizes, accuracy ofworkmanship, with the parts interchangeable, while under our system of shopnumbers and construction by templets, duplicate paits can be supplied uponthe shortest notice, with a surety that when received-they will be exactlywhat is needed.

Our workmen are organized into special corps and divisions under the super-vision of men of long, practical experience and accustomed to their particularclass of work, which insures not only accuracy of construction, but a positivecertainty that machines will operate in the most satisfactory manner. Everyarticle is required to pass a most rigid inspection hy competent experts, who arerequired to test, in the most crucial manner, each machine before shipment.
