No. 2^ Six-Roll
Double-Cylinder Pacific Patent Planing and Matching Machine.
With Forged-Steel Slotted Cylinders and Patent Prop Matchers.
Planes Both Sides to 24" wide, 6" thick, and Matches 1 6" wide.
This machine is designed for all general shop purposes. It is massive andpowerful, having a train of six heavy feeding- rollers, all strongly and expan-sively geared. It will plane on Loth sides to 24" in width, 6" thick, and matchto 16" wide.
It is really a medium-size machine, and one thoroughly adapted for work-ing, all kinds of white and yellow pine flooring, ceiling, rustic siding, etc. It ismade with or without Leading attachment, as may Le wanted. The cutter-headsare made from solid steel forgings, with lips for working cross-grained material,
and slotted on all four sides, for the use of molding, rustic siding, or other
cutters. The journals are of large diameter, exceptionally long, lead-ground, andhave driving pulleys upon each end.
The upper cylinder bearings are heavy, and planed to fit to upright stands, east solid to the Led which extends across the machine, tying them together inthe most rigid manner. T-lie ways are fitted with a V, in which the bearings
are bedded, and always retained in line. An automatic self-acting pressure-bar
is placed before the cut, and arranged to retain the edge of the bar at all timesin nearly the same relative position to the cutting-edge of the knives. A self-acting pressure-bar is placed after the cut, which adapts itself to the surface ofthe material being worked. The pressure-bars before and after the cut of eachcylinder are adjustable to or from the cylinders for making moldings, rustic ordrop-siding. The plate under the cylinder can be removed for trueing up whenworn out of line by use.
The matching arbors are large diameter, have long self-oiling bearings, andare adjustable across the bed which distributes the friction of the lumber onthe bed-plate, and prevents unevenness of wear. They are fitted with our patentweighted side chip-breakers for working cross-grained and knotty lumber. Thematching-heads are gun metal, with solid milled cutters.
The feed-works consist of six large feed-rolls, two pairs in front of the maincylinder, and one pair after the under cylinder; these carry the lumber entirelythrough the machine, always keeping the board in a straight line. They aremounted upon planed upright stands, and connected by heavy patent expansiongearing, which will open to receive 6" material. The rolls are weighted uponthe inside of the frame, and move with perfect freedom. The feed is very power-ful, the rollers being large, and the belting and gearing so proportioned as toallow no slipping.
The patent drop-matching attachment consists of a vertical sliding frame, upon which the matching heads and arbors are mounted. By moving a leverthey are instantly dropped below the line of the bed-plate, when the machineis wanted for wide surfacing, and vice versa. Each machine is furnished withthe improved double belt-tightener, pulleys for changes of feed, wrenches, etc.
The countershaft has tight and loose pulleys 12"x8", and should make 900revolutions.
