J. A. FAY & CO.’S ILLUSTRATED CATALOGUE
Both leading-out Guides have a simultane-ous movement to suit the width of the hoard, also an independent movement of each, at thewill of the operator, without having to stop andfind wrenches and unscrewing holts.
The Matching Arbors have hoth a conjointand independent adjustment in connection withthe long Guides.
These Guides are controlled by the operatorat the feeding-in end of the machine. A largescale in the platen indicates at a glance thewidth of material that may be worked by thematcher-heads, the guide being always carriedupon the line of cut with them. The matcher-hanger on the left side is adjustable in connection with the left feeding-outguide, and both matcher-hangers can be adjusted independently or simultane-ously from the working side of the machine if so desired. A lock attachmenton the side of the frame secures the matclier-works in position wherever setwithout any liability of moving.
The under cylinder in the regular double-cylinder machine is arranged in front of the lastpair of feeding rolls, close to the matching works.
It is mounted in a heavy frame, with connectedbearings of large diameter, and spout for exhaust-fan connection for removing shavings. Upon eitherside are solid Pressure-Bars, independently adjust-able both vertically and to and from the cylinder, and also vertically adjustable with the cylinder andframe by means of crank and screws to suit thecut to be made. The Pressure-Bar over the cylinderis so arranged that it can be swung back out of theway to give access to the cutters for sharpening oradjustment in one moment’s time.
In the triplex-cylinder machines the first cylinder is arranged between thefirst and second pairs of feed-rolls, and finishes the under side of the lumberbefore it reaches the upper cylinder and bed-plate. This method insures a smoothsurface of the under side of the lumber while passing over the bed-plate of theupper cutting cylinder during the process of planing to a true thickness. Itresults in specially nice and smooth work even with a high speed of feed, asthere is but a little reduction for the last, or finishing cylinder just before thefeeding-out or delivery rolls to perform. All the cuts upon the lumber are maderelatively near each other where the machine is the strongest, heaviest, and bestable to withstand vibration.
