Automatic Car Gaining and Boring Machine.

Automatic Feed, Expansion Gaining Head, and Vertical Boring Attachment.

Gains Both Ways.

This is a massive tool, made in column form, with a reciprocating framearranged to traverse across tlie top, carrying an expansion gaining Read, whichwill cut up to twice its widtli. It occupies a floor space of 10 / x21 / . Timbers upto 16" thick by 22" wide can be gained straight or at an angle to the depth of 4",and also bored. By means of the stops in front of the table, duplicates of timbersmay be produced indefinitely, the stops indicating the width and distance apartof tlie gains. The depth of the gains is determined by the position of the stopsin the cutter-liead slide, which will indicate four depths of gains. The table runsupon friction-rollers, and is moved by means of a rack and pinion, operated bya hand-wheel.

The gaining head and slide has a vertical movement, governed by the leverin front and counterbalanced by a weight, which is quickly raised or loweredwithout changing the position of the hand lever. The gaining head is expan-sive, and will cut any size up to double its width. Other sizes are made to cutup to 6" in width at one operation. The reciprocating frame, which moves thecutter-liead in its movement across the table, is driven by a train of powerfulgearing within the frame, and runs at a fixed speed in both directions. It isentirely automatic, and can be stopped at any point by the stops on the side ofthe column.

This enables gaining to be done upon both the forward or backward strokeof the [gaining frame, the gaining head being so constructed as to facilitate theoperation. The driving countershaft is placed vertically over the center of thedistance of the travel of the pulley shaft in the rear end of the traversingframe. The arc of the circle struck from it being but slightly different from itschord, the tension of the belt remains nearly uniform.

A vertical boring attachment having a movement of 10", and also a trav-erse movement over the carriage of 16" upon the right-hand side of the col-umn allows the boring of timbers and sills after the gaining has been completed. It can be used or not, and is not in the way of gaining.

The tight and loose pulleys are 14"x8", and should make 584 revolutions.
