No. 3!4 Patent

Power Mortising and Boring Machine.

With Graduated Stroke and Automatic Chisel-Reverser.

This mortising and boring machine is intended to meet the demand for arapid working machine of small cost, capable of doing the lighter class of mor-tising in wagon, furniture, agricultural and other shops. It lias a graduated stroke, and can be relied upon for any work within its capacity.

The column is heavy, with the driving pulleys at the top between bearings.Every point in the graduated movement is bored, turned, and compensating. Itis self-contained, capable of the hardest service, and with ordinary care can beoperated for years without repair. It is a size smaller than the No. 4, but similarexcept in size and weight.

Among its many points of excellence may be enumerated a perfectly grad-uated stroke of the cliisel-bar, commencing at a still point above the extremeupper throw, and gradually working down into the mortise with little or noperceptible jar to the foot of the operator. The automatic chisel-reverser, which issimple and perfect, reverses the chisel-bar instantly at the will of the operatorwhile in motion.

It has the compound lied, on which the stuff is clamped and moved to thechisel by rack and pinion instead of by hand, an important feature when mor-tising hai'd wood. The bed lias a radial adjustment for angle mortising, and acentral screw support in line with the chisel extending to the base of the machine,by which is secured a vertical adjustment for regulating the depth of the mortise.

The boring attachment is placed upon the side of the column with thecenter of the auger of the boring mandrel placed exactly in line with that ofthe chisel, so that after being bored, the piece has merely to be moved to bringit under the chisel. The gearing and cross-shaft are enclosed in a hollow tube. The boring arbor lias a sufficient vertical range to enable the operator to borethe full depth of the mortise, a stop-rod indicating the distance. It is providedwith six chisels, X", }i", %" %" and l", with suitable auger to match.

The tight and loose pulleys are 12"x.3", and should make 400 revolutions.
