Power Mortising and Boring Machine.
With Graduated Stroke and Automatic Chisel-Reverser.
This is a powerful machine, and capable of mortising most any descriptionof timber. The driving pulleys are placed at the top of a massive columnbetween bearings, the base of the machine is broad, securing large floor support, rendering it entirely self-contained.
It is strongly recommended for agricultural, furniture, and carriage work,or wherever a heavy machine for general work in hard wood is needed. Thechisel-mandrel has a perfectly graduated stroke, commencing at a still pointabove the extreme upper throw, and working gradually down into the mortise, with little perceptible jar to the foot of the operator. It also reverses auto-matically.
Every joint in the graduated movement is bored and turned and compensat-ing, while there is not a single piece that will not last a lifetime with care andskillful use. It runs without noise, and from the lightness and strength of thereciprocating parts can be run at a much faster speed than other machines.
The bed on which the timber rests is 40" long and 7" wide, and arranged forradial mortising. It is raised or lowered to suit different thicknesses by meansof the screw directly under the line of the chisel, which receives the force of theblow, and by which it is supported. The bed has a cross adjustment to regu-late the position of the mortises to be made, and is fitted with screw clamp forholding the work to the bed; also a raek-and-pinion feed operated by a hand-wheel, by which the piece can be readily moved into position under the chisel.
The boring apparatus is contained in a compact cylindrical housing, whichentirely covers the gears, and is so placed that the center of the auger is alwaysexactly in line with the center of the chisel, so that after the piece is boredit has only to be moved under the chisel to be mortised. The boring spindlehas a vertical range to bore through 6" timber, and can be used as a separateboring machine when not required for mortising. The stroke of the machineis 6", and will receive timber up to 15><" thick.
Each machine is furnished with nine chisels, viz.: T \", y/', i",
1 ly,", with augers to match.
The tight and loose pulleys are 14"x 3", and should make 325 revolutions.
