Four-Spindle Vertical Car Boring Machine.
With Power Reversible-Table Feed and Quick-Return Spindles.
This is a large and powerful machine, designed for the heaviest class ofwork in car and railway-shops, and will bore holes up to 3 %" diameter. Thespindle carriages with the table and countershaft are all mounted upon aheavy column and held rigidly in line. It has four power boring spindlesand carries four augers.
The spindles are large in diameter, lead-ground, and run in heavy bear-ings. Each is mounted on a gibbed frame, and separately adjustable acrossthe timber, and vertically to suit the depth of the boring. The traversemovement of the spindles across the timber is 12", and made by a hand-wheel and screw. The vertical movement of the spindles is 14", with a quickreturn by means of a counterbalance lever.
The spindles are furnished with stop collars for gauging the depth ofthe bore, and have different-size pulleys to vary the speed of the augers. The advantage of this machine is the same as the Three-Spindle, a savingof time in the avoidance of frequently changing augers. With each machineis sent one auger, each, A". A", L", W', if", tt", H", 1", IK", l%", l«".
1 %", 2", each 12" twist.
The table has a series of large rollers, all driven. These carry the timberin either direction, to the right or left, by simply moving a lever in front. In addition a hand-wheel is connected with the rollers by which the operatorcan move the timber endwise in either direction to a determinate point whenthe power feed is not required. The countershaft is attached to the backof the column at the base, one belt conveying the power to all the boringspindles.
The tight and loose pulleys are 12" x 8", and should make 350 revolutions.
