Automatic Oval Wheel-Tenoning Machine.

"With Automatic Feed and Adjustable Wheel-Holders.

This machine is for making tenons oval on the ends of spokes where theyenter the felloe, the diameter being made longest with the grain of the wood. This form of tenon reduces the risk of splitting the felloe in driving it on, andinsures sufficient friction to hold it in its place without the necessity of wedging.

The wheel hub is held between taper cups which have a horizontal adjust-ment upon the frame to reduce the spokes to the desired length. The spoke isgrasped and held between two geared clamps, which open and close simultane-ously, and bring the center of the spoke to the center of the revolving disks.

The frame that carries the cutter-heads has two disks, revolved by a seriesof cut gearing driven by friction and controlled by a foot-lever. These carrythe cutter-head around the spoke, (jutting from the outside toward the center, making a perfectly smooth tenon without any tear or splitting.

The arbor carrying the cutter-head and saw passes through the revolvingdisks near their peripheries. The bearings in which it runs are adjustable bymeans of cams for different sizes of tenons.

The frame in which the disks revolve has a vibrating motion given to itby a counterbalanced hand-lever. By depressing this lever the cutter-head isbrought forward, the saw cutting off' the end and the cutter-head forming theoval tenon, which may be varied in size to suit the work required.

The tight and loose pulleys are 8"x4", and should make 475 revolutions.
