JOHNSON, CAMMELL, & CO.,

CYCLOPS STEEL WORKS, SHEFFIELD.

EXTRACT FROM

Commencing with the miscellaneous specimens con-tributed by various manufacturers, we then find last, though not least, a striking group from the CyclopsIVorks, the property of Messrs. Johnson, Cammell, & Co.,comprising specimens of files and rasps from 1 to 46inches long (some of them very remarkable in form, ma-nufactured specially for use in the national dockyards),iron and steel suitable for engineering, tool-making, &c.;specimens of locomotive engine and tender, railway-car-nage, horse-box, buffer and other springs, &c. Togetherwith these specimens is displayed a large and beautifullyExecuted model of the Cyclops Works, accurately repre-senting all the ramifications of that extensive establish-inent. To this house is devoted not only a large por-tiou of space at the end of the western wall and thecounter beneath, but also the wall space at right angleswth it as far as it extends. The name and address

THE TIMES.

of the firm, together with the arms of royalty, areconspicuously blazoned, so as to attract the eye of visi-tors perambulating the principal avenue and the gal-leries in various directions. 'The large display of filesin the compartment of Messrs. Johnson, Cammell, & Co.call for particular notice, inasmuch as, though of first-rate quality, they have not been made for exhibition, but taken from the ordinary stock. Of the larger descrip-tions of files it is well known that greater quantities areproduced at the Cyclops Works than at any other housein the kingdom, while in the articles of springs it isequally certain that that establishment ranks first in theworld in the extent of its productions; besides which, itstands amongst the foremost in the manufacture of steel. These facts sufficiently account for the great breadth ofspace assigned to Messrs. Johnson, Cammell, & Co. inthe locality in which they exhibit.

We now turn more immediately to the steel articlesiu the exhibition of British manufactures, many of themhalting an effective display. The most interesting con-tributions in this} class are from the far-famed CyclopsSteel Works, Sheffield, the manufactory of Messrs. Joux-5*°^, CaaimkUi, & Co., which enterprising firm were theinventors of the celebrated Patent Klastic Oast-steel liaii-Wa y and other Springs, mul, by their skilful manipulationthe metal, have vastly enlarged the consumption and^proved the general quality and manufacture of steel. Here we have specimens of the different processes oftaking steel from the raw iron as imported from Swedena "d Russia up to the most refined state of the metal, and,a * 0 , of manufactured articles in which the best qualitysteel is an indispensable requisite. Follow that pieceiron through all its various stages, carbonized, con-certed, melted, and refined, until it terminates in one ofhe landyou h av

and you will instantly recognise the cause o ourfiority i n the manufacture of steel: indeed the loreigumetal in its most finished state is scarcely worth the nameof steel, not having passed through the cementing oi ea'o which it is subjected in England. The steel ot Messrs.Johnson, Cammell, & Co., has acquired a high name lorlU [superior quality, whether it be in the condition of

cemented blister, double sheer, elastic spring, ordouble refined cast steel, all of which enter largely intothe purposes of manufacture. In locomotive mechanicalaids, such as springs, files, steel, &c. &c., Messrs. Johnson,Cammell, & Co. make a most interesting and importantdisplay ; the curvilinear tanged file, for iustauce, beinga grand improvement upon the common form of that tool;so, also, the continuous tooth concave and convex file, which received the well-merited recognition of a medalfrom the Society of Arts. The steel, engineering, andmachinists files of Messrs. Johnson, Cammell, & Co., areused solely in Iler Majestys dockyards, the HonourableEast India Company's workshops, and most of the publicand private engineering establishments in this and othercountries; and, from the great estimation in which theyare held, hid fair to supersede all others. In mentioningone firm of real practical eminence, we mention, as itwere, all that come within the range of their peculiarclass of manufacture ; therefore, by way of limiting ourlabours, we shall direct attention to the files of Messrs.Johnson, Cammku, & Co., whose careful finish w ill beimmediately recognised; to their springs for railwaycarriages; and, above all, to their piston rod, weighing16 cwt., the finest and largest piece of steel ia the Exhibi-tion. This rod is of cast steel, and 1ms passed throughthe several processes of manufacture already enumerated, and, as regards its wprking qualities, it is fair to assumethat they are very far more efficient than those of theordinary pistons, which are generally made of greatlyinferior metal/
