CANTON OF ARGOVIA.
The canton of Argovia formerly composed the north-ern part of the canton of Berne, to which it was subjectby conquest from the Emperors of Germany : theCounty of Baden is now annexed to this canton.
The capital, called Arau, was for a long time a place°f great importance. After the last general revolution,ns the senate assembled there, it was considered as thecapital of Helvetia ; but, in 1802, it became the capital°f a canton, to which it has the honour of giving thelame. When it was under the sovereignty of Berne, itenjoyed great privileges; amongst others, that of elect-ing its own magistrates. It is a large town, on theborders of the Aar, over which it has two strong-builtWooden bridges. There are a great many beautifulw alks about this town, but in itself there is nothingParticularly worthy of observation, except one oldtower, composed of pebbles, which has a very curiouseffect.
