TO PHILIP STEPHENS, ESQ, ADMIRALTY.

[Autograph, in the Admiralty.Having determined to remain unemployedduring the Peace, (vide p. 77,) he resolved on going to France accompanied byhis friend Captain James Macnamara, to acquire the French language. Nothaving received an answer to this Letter, he again applied to Mr. Stephens, forleave in similar terms, in a Letter dated on the 14th of October.]

I am to request that you will be pleased to move theirLordships to grant me six months leave of absence, to go toLisle, in France , on my private occasions.

Being obliged by illness to leave His Majestys Ship Janus ,then under my command in the West Indies , I am to requestyou will be pleased to move their Lordships that [they] willbe pleased to allow me whole Pay from my quitting the Ship ,on the 4th of September 1780, till my arrival in England, the20th of November following.
