HISTORY.

HISTORY OE THE ORDERS OF KNIGHTHOOD OF THE

BEITISH EMPIRE, of the Order of the Guelphs of Hanover, and ofthe Medals, Clasps, and Crosses conferred for Naval and Military Services.Four Volumes, royal 4to. 1842.

This Work (dedicated by gracious permission to Her Majesty) contains acomplete History of the Orders of the Garter , Thistle, St. Patrick, the Bath, Saint Michael and Saint George, and the Guelphs of Hanover, from their several foundations; together with an Account of all Medals and otherBadges conferred for Military Services; and contains the Name of every Individualwho has received an Honorary Distinction of any kind whatever, (except the Water-loo Medal) from the Sovereigns of this Country. It is illustrated by illuminatedEngravings, of the exact size of the originals, of all the Ribands, Collars , Stars, and other Insignia, of the respective Orders, Medals, &c.

No general History of the British Orders has hitherto appeared. ....Besidesany intrinsic value which might belong to a Work of this description, it can scarcelyfail to interest, in the highest degree, not only such persons as have been distin-guished by marks of their Sovereigns favour, but their families and friends, towhom it will be a perpetual memorial of relatives whose services and characterreflect honour upon their name. .... "To create a lasting Memorial of the distin-guished Men by whose talents, conduct, and valour, the Country has been raised tothe pinnacle of Martial Glory; and thus to form, as it were, a General Registerof Honour, or Libro dOro of British Merit, was no unworthy, and it assuredlyhas proved a grateful task "Preface*
