This shows that the orbital velocity of a planet decreases, thegreater its distance from the Sun .

Extending the above scheme, we find that the apheliondistance of Enckes comet would be 880 feet; the apheliondistance of the 6th comet of 1858, 6 miles; and the distanceof the nearest fixed star, 7,500 miles.
