4. General’s hut in new communication t from left ofsecond parallel, excavation for body, and passage sunkto about three feet six inches below surface of ground;soil very good ; 1st relief, 1 Sapper and 15 men.
5. Extreme advance in front of Quarries, rightportion deepened, and parapet thickened, and extendedto the right 10 gabions ; ground very rocky ; mencannot work at it during the daytime, cover not yetsufficient; 1st relief, 1 Sapper and 25 men.
6. Centre Russian trench v, widening the partcommenced the other night, and continuing it ; soilvery good, but not much cover obtained in new part ;1st relief, 2 Sappers and 70 men.
7. Old Russian trench, fourth parallel ; trenchcould not be deepened, a layer of rock intervenes, butthe cover was increased and parapet thickened, bycarrying earth and stones from the rear ; the sapwas advanced to the right, cutting across the Russian rifle-pit x ; within the pit excellent cover wasobtained, within which the men can work during theday ; the trench to the right has still very littlecover; ground hard and rocky; 1st relief, linlf brigadeSappers and 200 men.
8. No. 18 batteiy, thickening parapet from bothfront and rear, about nine inches in height of earthwas spread over it, 1 brigade Sappers and 400 men.
9. The latrines are becoming very offensive indeed ;they cannot have been properly attended to.
10. Towards dark yesterday evening the Russian “steamers” got up their steam for the purposeapparently of conveying either stores or troops acrossthe harbour.
11. The enemy shelled the working parties veryseverely during the early part of the night; not manycasualties occurred.
12. The enemy were busily employed inside theRedan ; some I perceived revetting and building uploopholes between the embrasures.
