I did not notice any large working parties of theenemy, but he seemed to have been at work generallyalong his line.
The cover in the new approaches to the rifle-pit qis still very defective ; and from the very great diffi-culty of getting earth near at hand I fear some timemust elapse before these approaches can be used inthe daytime, unless cover is made by sandbags.

Extract from report from the field officer of thetrenches to the general officer commanding in thetrenches, Right attack, on the 22d July 1855 :—
“ I nlso beg to remark upon the very unsafe stateof parts of our advanced works ; the parapet on theright of No. 18 (mortar battery) is in a mostdangerous state.
“ In several places, where shot or shell have almostlevelled the parapet, there has been no notice takenof it, and parties passing by these places are easilyseen by the enemy, bringing upon the relievingparties a heavy fire.”
Observations.
It is the duty of the gunrd of the trenches to repairdamages caused by a shot or shell in the parapetwhere they are stationed. The officer in charge of themen stationed near the breach should pay immediateattention to those important points, and if materialsare not at hand they should apply at the engineerdepot for them.
Inquiry shall be made in respect to the latter partof the field officer's report.
