Left Attack.

These parties were employed as during 1st relief.
Three men were killed during the day ; two by ashell, and one by a rifle-ball.
There was a heavy fire in the afternoon on theworking party in No. 16 battery.
Right Attack.
2. Fifth parallel, 1st relief, six Sappers and 60 men,2d relief, three Sappers and 60 men, collecting earthfor throwing over the parapet during the night, andfilling 900 sandbags for the same purpose; likewiserepairing portions of the old parapet which had beeninjured by the enemy’s fire.

3. New 2-gun battery, No. 20, in the Quarries , 1strelief, three Sappers and 20 men, 2d relief, two Snp-pers and 20 men, widening the terreplcinc, and thick-ening parapet, and collecting earth for the nightrelief.
4. Conveying 180 gabions from the depot in the21-gtin battery to the Right approach k to the fourthparallel, for the purpose of being able to continuethat trench to the edge of the ravine during the nightrelief, 1st relief, two Sappers and 60 men.
5. Fourth parallel, right extremity, filling sandbags,and conveying them to where the Right approach mto the fifth parallel commences, ready for the night’suse, 2d relief, five Sappers and 130 men.
6. No. 19 battery, 1st relief, 2 Sappers, one brigadecarpenters, 2d relief, 66 men, three Sappers and onebrigade carpenters, thickening parapet, clearing terre-pleine, and increasing size of the left epaulmenf,likewise continuing the excavation for the magazine,&c., filling sandbags for revetting the same, &e.
7. 21-gun battery, 2d relief, one brigade of car-penters repairing and partially relaying one of theplatforms which had sustained a good deal of wearand tear.
8. Three Sappers were employed during both reliefsas sentries over the various depots of tools.
9. I again had great difficulty in obtaining a suffi-ciency of men as a working party.
During the 1st relief I obtained merely 200 insteadof 300, and 100 men of the 2d relief did not arriveuntil 5.30 i*.m. instead of 3 o’clock. Great confusionis created by this irregularity in the arrival of theworking party, and the services of several Sappersinvariably lost. I likewise beg to remark, that theadjutant of the trenches does not seem to be aware ofthe general order directing him to meet the officersof Royal Engineers in the Quarries at certain statedhours, thus frequently obliging the latter officer toperambulate the whole of the trenches for the purposeof finding him, to the detriment of his work.
