REPORT ON ZOOLOGY, MDCCCXLIII.
which genus also constitutes a special group, the Hebetominae. Antennae ineach sex almost as long as the body, with about 14 joints, thickly coveredwith hairs, the hairs short, not verticillate, eyes round, in both sexes standingapart. Head prolonged anteriorly, rostriform, the suctorial proboscisrather longer than the rostrum, thick, the palpi 4-jointed, the terminaljoint long, slender, flexible. The wings thickly covered with hairs, withnumerous longitudinal nervures. Three species, H. papatasii, Tip. pap.,Scop., in central Italy , H. minutus, new species, from the plain of Parma, H.molestus ( Oyniph. molesta, Costa), from Naples; minute insects, less than 1"',but very troublesome on account of their sting.
Empides. —Schummel (Arbeit, u. Verand. der schles. Gesellsch. p. 189)has thought that Rhamphomyia alpestris should be distinguished as a newspecies from Rh. anthracina, from the greater length of the rostrum; acharacter, however, derived from this part, for specific distinction is in thiscase uncertain, since it varies according to circumstances.
Dolichoeodes. —Zetterstedt ’s ‘ Dipt. Scandinavise’ contains a number ofnew species; Stager’s Monograph , however, of the Danish Dolichopodes,is still to be collated, which has as yet not been employed.
Stuphioi. —A new genus, Spazigaster, has been instituted by Rondani.(Rev. Ent. p. 43.) The first two joints of the antennae short, the thirdroundish, the antennal seta with short hairs, face tuberculated, mouth notprojecting; eyes bare. Fourth longitudinal nervure of the wings straight.Abdomen spatulate, compressed, contracted at the base. Legs simple.Sp. Apennini, black, abdomen red in the middle, wings smoky. From theApennines . From the same locality is Merodon armipes, Rondani (ib.)
Two new Silesian species have been proposed by Schummel (Arbeit, u.Verand. der schles. Gesellsch. s. 190), Sgrphus alpicola (belonging to thesub-genus Platgcheirus, Ene.), and Eristalis nigro-antennatus, allied to E.praiorum, similis, &c.
Zetterstedt ’s ‘ Diptera Scandinavise’ contains numerous new species:Brachyopa vittata, from the North, very similar to B. ferruginea, Borosdecoratus, very much resembling B.festivus and ornatus, Scceva nigritarsis, diaphana, melanostonia, nitens, lineola, vittigera, hilaris, macularis, lasioph-thalma, maculicornis, triangulifera, cinctella, angustata; Sphcerophoria nigri-coxa, differing from Sp. scripta, in having the coxse black, &c., Sph.flavi-cauda, Loewii j Eristalis (the author embraces under this name, at variancewith the more usual definition, the Ckeilosia of Meigen , terming thelatter’s Eristalis “ Sgrphus”), proxima, prcecox, imiupta, coracina, rostrata, melanopa, soror, latifrons, Sclimidtii, Pipiza hiteitarsis, vana, morionella, fulvi-mana, geniculata, Ratzeburgi, Heringi, Psiloia ruficornis, Paragus ruficauda,Eumerus jlavitarsis, Xglota confinis.
The European species of the genus Chrysogaster have been carefully
