REPTIL1A

BY

DR. F. H. TROSCHEL

Systema reptilium auctore Leopoldo Fitzinger; Fasciculusprimus. Amblyglossae. Vindobonae, 1843. The authorgives an introductory general view of his System of theAnimal Kingdom, in which he classifies all animals, as faras into orders, on the supposition that in each division onesystem of organs must be specially developed. Thus, according to him, the class of Reptiles is that in which thefunction of generation, and at the same time the muscularsystem, are especially developed, in opposition to that of theFishes in which nutrition, together with the osseous system, would seem to be particularly developed. The furtherdivision of the Reptiles, like that of the other Yertebrata,is then proceeded with, according to the predominantdevelopment of the five senses: (1) Touch: Rhizodonta, with the orders Cetosauri, Loricata, and Ornitliosauri; (2)Taste : Dipnoa, with the orders Ichthyodea, Ilemibatrachia,Batrachia; (3) Smell: Testudinata, with the orders Oiaco-poda, Steganopoda, Tylopoda; (4) Hearing : Leptoglossae, with the orders Ophidia, Hemisauri, and Sauri; (5) Sight :Amblyglossae, with the orders Ascalabotae, Humivagae, Den-drobotae.-The Crocodiles consequently have been obligedto part company with the Saurians, because the male hasfive senses, and necessarily come under the tactile Reptiles(Gefiihlsreptilien), which might now be associated (schwarmen)
