General Remarks concerning the Fauna der Ukraine undder Steppe am Dneiper, are to be found in the Reise imsudlichen Russland von Blasius, ii, s. 314, u. 285.

The animal world of the Ukraine has in this work been so richly illus-trated as to show that the species of the middle and south Russian Faunahere occur in mutual association. While, upon the one hand, the Bear andElk here attain their southern limit of range, numerous other species, whichbelong rather to the south, reach the northern boundary of their roamings. The main body of animals consists only of those that are found in the middleof Europe northward of the Alps. The Roe completely agrees in characterwith our own; its occurrence is striking, since it is not met with in aneasterly direction as far as the Ural, nor westward unto Yolhynia and Lithu ania . Myoxus dryas is not rare; several species of Sousliks, among which isSpermophilus guttatus, occur; Ardomys bobac is frequently kept in a tamestate; Arvieolaglareola is as frequent in the woods as arvalis is in the fields. While in the north, as low down as Petersburg, only a single Bat occurs :all the species of middle Europe are here met with. Among the rapaciousanimals, Mustela sarmatica affords a characteristic type. Although most ofthe characteristic species, that animate the south and steppes, advance forthe first time further southward and south-east, still the Fauna of the south
