According to oral information received from the author, this catalogue,which has no further aim than to facilitate exchanges between collectors,was compiled with the greatest haste j nevertheless judicious use has beenmade of the Monographs that have appeared most recently. In many por-tions of such a compilation the names of catalogues and manuscripts arefelt as an encumbrance; but one which will diminish daily, in proportionas Eaunas and Monographs carry on the advance of the science. Theactivity at present evinced in this direction will, doubtless, make a newedition of this catalogue by the same author, to the present date, much morecomplete.

The Natural History Society of the Harz has proposed, as its specialobject, to investigate the natural productions of that district. The authorhas undertaken the Coleoptera , of which this essay forms the first part.The Harz comprehends a space of sixteen [German ] miles by ten, and, withgreat diversity of positive elevation, physical configuration, soil and vegeta-tion, presents indisputably one of the most interesting and copious Faunasof Northern Germany, and one which has been diligently investigated, asthe present part of the catalogue evinces. The locality is particularizedunder every species, and frequently critical remarks are appended.
