regards as organs of taste. On each side are two branchial lamellae, con-joined anteriorly, posteriorly free. On each side two oral lobes. Theintestine passes in a direct line, and without offering any dilatation, to theanus. Of sexual organs the author has found merely an ovary withoutexcretory canal, which reaches as far as the internal opening of the analsiphon. The foot is small, simple, and has at the extremity a minute roundimpression, which may serve to the animal as a suctorial disc, for the pur-pose of affixing itself. In the nervous system, only the pharyngeal ganglionand the posterior ganglion with its filaments were observed. On accountof the great correspondence between the animal and that of Mya , the authorreplaces the genus Anatina in the Mya family, and also notices that thecalcareous body at the hinge (l’osselet) is present in A. tnmcata and inA. Liautaudi, Mittre, and that, on the other hand, it is wanting in A. subros-trata, Lam., A. hispidula, Cuv., and A. Lemma, Conrad.
Lastly, he also describes a new species of this genus, Anatina Liautatidi:testa minima, transversa, utrinque rotundata, fragili, pellucida, antico latereposteriorique hiante, transversim striata, punctis minimis extus asperata.Manilla.
A. elegans, Philippi (Menke, Zeitsch.), differs from A. tnmcata, Lam., in therectilinear abdominal border, and in the posterior border being truncated ina straight line, perpendicularly. China .
Solen Bouchardii , Potiez et Michaud (Gal. p. 261): testa oblongo-ovali, recta, convexa, transverse striata, utrinque rotundata, sub epidermidefulva, intus alba; alterius valvse cardine bidentato, alterius unidentato.Gulf of Guinea . According to the drawing, the shell is subtruncateanteriorly, the cardinal teeth are placed a little behind the middle.
To the genus Olauconoma, which was first placed by Gray near Venus, andby Reeve in the family of the Solenacese, Hanley has referred Solen virens.(Proceed. 13, Feb. 1844; ib. Feb. 1844; Annals, xiv, p. 382.) LovellReeve describes seven new species of this genus, which are figured in hisConchologia iconica. G. rugosa, straminea, corrugata, from the Island ofNegros, curta, from Luf on, cerea, from the Ganges . All inhabit the mouthsof the rivers.
Jonas (Menke, Zeitschr. p. 135) gives some critical remarks upon thegenus Fistulana. It is identical with Gastroehcena, Spengler, who first in1783, described three species, and a fourth subsequently, in 1793. Gastro-chana wiumia, Sp., is identical with Fistulana clava, Lam. Fistulana gregatais a Teredo, and must again receive the name of Teredo clava. Gastr. eunei-fomis has been correctly separated by Philippi from Pholas pusilla, Poli.{Gastr. Pholii, Phil.); Gastroch. modiolina, Lam., is also a distinct goodspecies. Gastr. cymbium, is unknown to the author. Gastr. rostrata, Sp.,on the other hand, is described at length; it is figured in Chemnitz , x. f,1680, 81.
