mentary feet. This worm is probably to be referred to theNais picta, described by Dujardin. (Ann. d. sc. nat. t. ii,1839, p. 293, PI. 7, Figs. 9-11.)
Muller (Abhandlungen der Koniglichen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin . Aus dem Jahre, 1841, Berlin , 1843,p. 181), gives up the appellation of Cyclocirra Thompsonii, introduced for Myzostomum cirriferum, Leuck., but declares,as the Reporter also bad done (Arcbiv, 1843, Bd. ii, p. 299),that the species Myzost. ylabrum, instituted by Leuckart, isidentical with his other Myzostomum cirriferum. Hirudinei . The experiments hitherto published, on thesubject of the breeding of leeches, have been collected byEgidy in a special memoir (Die Blutegelzucht nach Ergeb-nissen der Erfahrung dargestellt, nachst ausfiihrlicherBeschreibung des Blutegels, seiner Arten u. Varietaten ,1844), together with which are also added, a history ofwhat is known respecting the anatomical structure of theLeech , a description of the allied species, and a copious ac-count of the literature of the subject. Olivier (Journal deChirurgie, par Malgaigne , 1844, Mars, p. 88) has proposeda curious proceeding. The fully-gorged leech should bepunctured with the point of a lancet, at the termination ofthe first third of its body, on the back, in one of the trans-verse wrinkles, the incision being made parallel with itbetween the vein and artery, and in a direction from beforeto behind. The wound must be two millimeters long. Theleech is afterwards to be placed in lukewarm water, in which,by the contractions of the animal, which may be assisted bypressure with the fingers, the blood that it had suckedescapes through the wound. Should a whitish bladderpresent itself in the wound, that is, a portion of the walls ofthe stomach, it is to be cut off in order to allow the bloodagain to escape freely. The animal is afterwards placed inrain- or river-water. The Ranunculus aquaticus appears to
