REPORT ON ZOOLOGY, MDCCCXLIV.

points, each of which represents a pointed cone directedbackwards. The neck and body of the animal appear rough, from small verrucose elevations, and at the extremity of thecylindrical, thick body, several small clavate appendagesproject. Rat like, who found this Sipunculus on the coast ofNorway , regards it as allied to Leuckarts Phascolosomalongicolle, in which he is undoubtedly right; at all events, the animal, whose figure is besides extraordinarily mutable, belongs to the genus Phascolosoma; if not, perhaps, toPhascol. granulatum, Leuck. Another animal also allied toPhas. granulatum has been described by J. Muller underthe name of Phascolosoma scutatum. It is distinguished bytwo sharply-defined, hard, coriaceous discs, one of which isplaced at the point where the body is continuous with theproboscis, but the other at the posterior extremity of thebody. The Reporter here adds, that the Zoological Collectionin Erlangen possesses a Phascolomosa scutatum, found byWill near Trieste , which is inserted in a very firm cal-careous tube of uniform width, and open above and below, into which the animal has the power of entirely retractingitself, when it certainly closes the orifices of the tube with itstwo discs. Muller moreover remarks, perfectly correctly, that Phascolosoma granulatum varies in many ways in formand the condition of the rough surface of its integument, and that Ascosoma Blumenbachii Leuck., Sipunculus verru-cosus Grub., Sip. tuberculatus Blainv., S. tigrinus and ft aimsRiss.; as also Sip. Bernhardus and Johnstoni, Forbes, proba-bly belong to Phascolosoma granulatum. The Reporter must,in addition, remark, that Phascolosoma longicolle, Leuck., isalso probably to be referred to the same species. Accordingto Rathkes researches (Nov. Acta Nat. Curios. 1. c. p. 136),Holothuria inluerens, Muller has no sucker (fusschen), butanchor-shaped and retiform calcareous corpuscles in itsverrucose integument, and is, consequently, a Synapta. Asmall, pisiform Holothuria flava, found by Rathke nearChristianssund, is furnished at the mouth with ten tentacula, and presents on the verrucose surface of the body five shallow
