Umbrina ronchus , Valenc. Canar. The body is higher than in the Medi­ terranean species; the scutum above the shoulder is very small. D. 11,25 ; A. 27. TJ. canariensis, id. (ib.) The first dorsal fin is lower, the secondlonger, the body more elongated. D. 11, 29 ; A. 2, 7.

Pentaceros Richardsonii, Smith, Ill. Capite scabre striito, squamis paucisinfra oculos ; thoraee scutis parvis multilateralibus tecto; dentibus crini-formibus; spinis pinnarum osseis, fortibus, longitudinaliter striatis, liuealaterali areuata. 21". D. 14, 9 ; A. 4, 8. Cape.

Pristipoma ronchus, Valenc. Cauar. D. 12,16 ; A. 3. 12. No spot onthe operculum.

Sgnanceia asteroblepa, Richardson (Voy. of the Sulphur). Capite subcylindrieo superne planiusculo, cute fimbriatula arete adhaerente tecto; cutecorporis laxa, minute papillosa; colore fusco-purpureo punctis brunneisminimis variegato ; pinnis pectoralibus maculatis; pinnis omnibus ad marginesnigrescentibus. D. 16, 4; A. 4, 5. New Guinea .

Sargus hottentotus, Smith, Ill. Corpore fasciis quinque verticalibus varie-gatis; maxillm dentibus incisoribus duodecim, mandibulas octo; pinnis ven-tralibus postice subarcuatis; pinna caudali furcata, 17i". D. 11, 13; A.3, 11. South-west coast of South Africa. S. capensis, id. (ib.) Pagrus Bertheloti, Valenc. Canar. D. 11, 12; A. 3, 9; red, with someblue spots. P. auriga, id. (ib.) Spines of the dorsal fin very high; reddishsilvery, with four or five broad brown bands. The author thinks it maypossibly be the young condition of the former species.

Pagellus canariensis, id. (ib.) differs from P. vulgaris in the shorter snout,less numerous anterior teeth, and larger molar teeth.

Bentex filosus, id. (ib.) The second ray of the dorsal fin very much elon-gated, the third and fourth less so. D. 13, 10; A. 3, 8.

Ijethrynus hcematopterus, Schlegel (Eauu. Japon .) D. 10, 9; A. 3, 8. Duskyolive-green on the head; brighter on the back, the scales have a brownspot, throat and lips carmine red, fins brownish yellow, dorsal fins posteriorlyblood red. 20".

Boops canariensis, Val. Canar., differs from B. mlgaris in the broaderhead and larger eyes. The colour on the back is silvery violet.

Melanichthys, new gen., Schlegel (Eaun. Japon ). Dentated teeth in onerow, behind which is another row of similar but smaller teeth, aud behindthese a row of setiform teeth; no palatal teeth. The species, which as yet
