Chap. 1 V- the Abaciis, is also somewhat different3 VitruVius makes it theThickness of the Abacus: Some have since made it drop as low asthe under Part of the Brim of the Vase, or Tambour, and it is yetmuch larger in the Temple of the Sibyl at TiVoli 3 for there it al-most covers the middle Volutes 3 it differs, also, in its Form, be-ing, generally, a Rose composd of six Leaves, each raffed intofive Olive-leaves, from the Middle of which, comes out a Sort ofFishes Tail, wavd and turning upwards : Thus it is in the Pantheon,in the Temple of Faustina, of Jupiter Fuhninans, and of Mars the(Revenger, in the Market of TSterVa, and in the Baths of Diocletian. In the Temple of Vesta, it has the Likeness of an Ear of Corn, in-stead of the Fishes Tail. In the Sibyl's Temple at T/Vo/i, the Rose, which is very large, and composd of Leaves not raised, has, also,in its Middle, the Form of an Ear of Corn, twisted like a Screw. In the Frontispiece of TSlero, there is a small Flower. In the Basilicof Antonine, and in the Arch of Conjtantine , the Bottom of the Roseis turned upwards, and has an Ear of Corn in the Middle. In thethree Columns of Campo Vaccino , the Rose, which is cut with Leavesof Acanthus, hangs very much downwards, and, in the Midst, hasa Pomegranate, turning also downwards. In the Porch of Septi-mius, instead of the Rose, there is an Eagle holding a Thunderbolt. This Rose, or whatever is inserted in the Midst of the Abacus, in-stead thereof, has different Projectures : It extends, sometimes, be-yond the Line which goes from one Horn of the Abacus to theother; as in the three Columns of Campo Vaccino, in the Altars ofthe Pantheon , in the Temple of the Sibyl, and the Basilic of Antoni-nus : Sometimes it recedes a small Matter within the Line, as in theTemples of Jupiter Fulminans, that of Mars the Pcvenger, and in theBaths of Diocletian 3 and sometimes its Projecture is the same withthe Line, as in the Pantheon, and in the Temple of Faustina.

The Volutes are sometimes joind one to the other, as in thePortico, and Inside of the Pantheon , in the Temples of Jupiter Ful-minans, and Mars Ultor, <&<c. Sometimes they are wholly separate,as in the Temple of Vesta, in the Frontispiece of TSlero, and in theBasilic of Antonine, Isrc. The Helices of the Volutes are ordinarilyof two Manners in the Antique : Some keep twisting even to theirEnd, in the fame Course, like the Shell of a Snail 5 others, towardsthe Center, turn back again, and form, as it were, a small S.Those of the first Sort are within the Pantheon, in the Temples ofVesta and TiVoli, and in the Baths of Diocletian 3 the other Manner, more usd in the Antique, is in the Porch of the Pantheon, and thatof Septimius, in the three Columns of Campo Vaccino, in the Tem-ples of Jupiter Fulminans, Mars Ultor, and that of Faustina, in theFrontispiece of TSlerp, the Basilic of Antoninus , the Market of TSlerVa,
