PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

For some time the first issue of this Report has been outof print, and of those for whom it was more particularlywritten there are many who have never had opportunity ofstudying it.

The page has been altered to a more convenient size,but, with the exception of one or two extracts from theMines Report of 1896, the matter is the same. To havealtered the Report so as to include a description ofthe Geology of the whole of the Otago ProvincialDistrict would have been a departure from the originalintention in preparing the work, and would not haveadded greatly to its usefulness.
