CHAPTER XI.

A ST OUTLINE OF THE GEOLOGY OFENGLAND.

I n the present chapter I propose to trace anoutline of the geology of‘England,and the lead-ing features of its physical structure and mi-neral geography. I wish the description, andthe map which accompanies it, to be consi-dered as presenting only a rapid sketch of themore important characters, without any at-tempt at minute accuracy of detail, which,were it attainable, would require an amplevolume of illustration, and be more likely tofatigue attention than to excite or gratifygeneral curiosity.

The shape of every island is determined bythe different mountain ranges that traverse it.The inspection of an accurate map, in whichthe mountains and elevations are distinctlymarked, would render this apparent. TheIpngth of Britain is determined by different
